Farwest Show Tours hold special interest for nursery growers on two fronts

Farwest Show tours

Welcome to Nursery Country! Join your fellow colleagues for a fun-filled day in the heart of Oregon’s renowned growing region.

The 2018 Farwest Show, August 22-24, in Portland, Oregon, offers two tour tracks with special interest for nursery growers in this year’s Nursery Country Tours on Tuesday, August 21, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sponsored by The Peters Company, one tour will give participants a close look at best practices of area tree growers in production, distribution, and shipping. A separate tour will highlight developments and improvements in greenhouse operations toward a more sustainable business model. Tours take place during the same time slot.

Participants choose one track or the other.

The first tour, “Nurs-TREE Country”, will showcase four premier tree growers in Portland’s nearby Willamette Valley. Stops include J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. (Boring, Oregon), Bountiful Farms Nursery (Woodburn, Oregon), Robinson Nursery Inc. (Amity, Oregon), and Oregon Pride Nurseries (McMinnville, Oregon). The list represents some of the best of Oregon’s tree producers in quality and operations.

The second tour, “Growing Toward Energy Efficiency in Greenhouse Production”, will be guided by energy efficiency expert, Ulrike Mengelberg of Energy Trust of Oregon. Stops include F&B Farms & Nursery (Woodburn, Oregon), Terra Nova Nurseries Inc. (Canby, Oregon), Smith Gardens (Aurora, Oregon), and Anderson Pots (Portland). Along the way, Mengelberg will share insight and information on sustainable applications. Participants will get first hand looks at the best of the best plant material in greenhouse production, concluding at container producer Anderson Pots and their state-of-the art water cooling tower system.

Cost for either tour is $99 per person by July 31; $119 after July 31. Space is limited to 50 participants per tour. Tour buses will depart from and return to the north entrance to the Oregon Convention Center (NE Holladay St., by the light rail line). The day long tours include luxury motor coach transportation, lunch, beverages and snacks. Personal vehicles not allowed.
