ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER

Ekstrom Nursery in Gresham, Oregon is looking for a career oriented individual to work in multiple areas. We are looking for an experienced individual who has a strong work ethic, is disciplined, motivated for personal and professional growth and committed to the vision of our company. We have 200 acres of container, field and bare root ornamental plants. Customer base includes retail, re-wholesale and growers. The person will work closely with the owners in all aspects of container, B&B and bare root production. This is a career opportunity for a person who is interested in diverse plant production and nursery business.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

  1. Experience in ornamental nursery production and propagation related to field, container and bare root.
  2. Oversee all aspects of our container production.
  3. Assist in crew management of field production practices and techniques.
  4. Assist with supervising and scheduling daily and weekly jobs.
  5. Must be self-motivated on projects or to work with a group or team.
  6. Possesses strong communication skills, interpersonal skills and be a person of good character.
  7. Computer knowledge, skills and abilities, and bilingual (English and Spanish) language desired, but not required.
  8. Strong work ethic and positive attitude.
  9. Valid driver’s license.
  10. Ability to work with wide variety of agricultural equipment, such as tractors and implements.
  11. Have leadership skills with ability to make decisions, train and motivate employees.

ASSISTANT FARM MANAGER – MOANA NURSERY

Moana Nursery in Canby, Oregon, is looking for a full-time Assistant Nursery Manager who will work directly with the General Manager. They will work in all areas of the 193-acre wholesale nursery, which has both container yard and field production. We have a parent company in Reno, Nevada, with three retail stores and a commercial/residential landscape division.

Duties:

  • Production planning, inventory
  • Herbicide applications in container yard and fields
  • Customer orders
  • Fleet maintenance decisions
  • Budgeting of annual expenses
  • Shipping
  • Supply purchasing.

Requirements:

  • A strong foundation in common sense
  • A strong knowledge of the ornamental nursery business
  • A strong knowledge of plant production, growing, propagation
  • Experience with irrigation systems, overhead impact sprinklers and drip irrigation
  • Experience with wide range of agriculture/farm equipment operation.
  • Computer experience
  • Bilingual is preferred.

Salary and benefits:

  • $55,000-$70,000/year (with bonuses)

Primary responsibilities/duties:

  • Track plant data
  • Assist in plant hybridization / field evaluation

Requirements/qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Reliable transportation to our location.
  • Experience in the flower/farming/plant/agricultural fields strongly preferred.

Plant Hybridizing: Assisting in hybridizing, record keeping of crosses/pollen/seeds, plant evaluation, researching, verifying, tracking plant
characteristics, blooming, recording/entering/tracking this data. Display garden management: Keep display garden deadheaded, presentable

HORTICULTURIST/FARM MANAGER

This position is responsible for managing all on-farm growing activities, including pesticide and fertilization applications, irrigation system management, pruning, and all harvest activities and help coordinating with our small group of partner growers. They will plan, organize, and direct the activities of team members to produce the highest quality Blueberries, while maximizing yields and efficiency, in an expanding people and acreage environment.

Duties Include: • Hands on responsibility for the development and maintenance of all growing systems. • Formulates farm operation schedules, communicates schedules to supervisors and ensures optimum timely operations, while meeting the high standards of growing quality Blueberries in a safe and professional environment. • Provides leadership, direction, and oversight to our farm team while working towards achieving the companies’ goals and helping to maintain performance and order in an environment of ever-changing priorities. • Works directly with the CEO, Director of Operations, and fellow Leadership Team to ensure implementation of all regulatory compliance, including people safety, food safety, and other compliance goals. • Provide direction and oversight for replacement, and new, planting development. • Assures and promotes effective communication between departments, and key personnel. Provides ongoing and timely collaboration and input to the CEO, Director of Operations, and fellow Leadership Team.

Qualifications: • Positive, Passionate and enthusiastic about Horticulture and an understanding of producing safe Blueberries for consumers. • A degree in agronomy or closely related field or a minimum of five years farm management experience. • PC based computer skills and learning ability for Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, as well as other customer software platforms. • Excellent communication, record keeping, and time management skills. • Experience in leading, motivating, delegating while putting People first. • Works well under pressure, managing multiple priorities while maintaining high quality standards. • Bi-lingual is desired and a very strong plus. • Clean driving record is mandatory.

Seedling Grower

Weyerhaeuser’s Western Timberlands has an opening for a Seedling Grower with our Western Regeneration business. This full-time position will be based at our Turner Regeneration Center in Turner, Oregon. The site produces over 11 million container and bareroot seedlings for internal and external reforestation customers, plug transplants for bareroot nurseries and operates 100 acres of seed orchard. Western Regeneration has 4 nurseries and 4 seed orchards located in Washington and Oregon.

Key Functions

  • Total commitment to working safe and following all safety rules and regulations.
  • Demonstrate and role model safety policies and safe work practices.
  • Provide daily leadership and supervision of company and contract crews while performing nursery activities associated with seedling production – including sowing, transplanting, irrigation, growing, inventory, frost protection, harvest, packing and shipping, maintenance, and seed orchard tree culture.
  • Follow and document reliable processes for safety, quality, production, and costs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Effectively prioritize, plan, implement, and manage activities to meet targets and deadlines.
  • Balance labor resources to ensure continuous improvement in safety, quality, production, and costs.
  • Perform “crop walks” to observe crop health and yield issues.
  • Ability to flow to work as needed to other projects within the site and potentially other Western Regeneration facilities.
  • Provide customer service.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of Associates Degree in a natural resource related field.
  • In lieu of a degree, a minimum of 4 years of greenhouse, nursery, orchard or ag production experience will be considered.
  • Proficient computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Flexible availability regarding days and hours of work during seasonal activities.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position including working both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and uneven working surfaces.
  • Ability to track the life cycle of crops through harvest.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment testing process, including drug screen.
  • Position will require residence within approx. 30 minutes of the facility (relocation options/assistance available)

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of pesticide use and application for seedling growing and protection.
  • Experience growing conifer seedlings in a greenhouse environment.
  • Ability to obtain Private Applicator License.
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of farm equipment.
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish.
