Workshop covers water management for nurseries

By Curt Kipp — Posted January 25, 2011

We mentioned it back in December, but here’s another reminder that the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC) will offer “Water Management for Floriculture and Nursery Crops,” a two-day workshop, on Thursday-Friday, Feb. 2–3, 2011 at the Wilsonville Holiday Inn (day one) and NWREC (day two).

According to the organizers, participants will learn how to:

  • monitor and manage pathogens, salts and alkalinity problems in irrigation water;
  • incorporate best management practices (BMPs) to monitor and manage fertility and irrigation;
  • remediate on-site water using non-chemical methods; and
  • use new research and technologies with advice from industry and university experts.

Participants will receive pesticide credits (application pending), a free booklet on water treatment, and tours of two top producers (Monrovia Nursery Co. in Dayton, Ore., and Woodburn Nursery and Azalea, Inc. in Woodburn, Ore.) Speakers will include Paul Fisher (University of Florida), Loren Oki (University of California), Jim Owen of Oregon State University (OSU), Jennifer Parke of OSU, Richard Regan of OSU and other industry experts.

The cost is just $100. You can sign up at the door or use the form. The registration form is available from Jan Egli ([email protected]). Completed forms may be mailed to Water Management Workshop, OSU-NWREC, 15210 NE Miley Road, Aurora, OR 97002. Overnight accommodations are available at the Holiday Inn Select Wilsonville, 25425 SW 95th Ave, Wilsonville, Ore. Call 1-503-682-2211 or 1-800-238-0767 or click here: http://goo.gl/8fdhU.
