Most nursery folks and many Northwest gardeners will agree that Tsugawa Nursery in Woodland, Wash. is a retail landmark along Interstate 5 in Southwest Washington. I remember my parents, eager gardeners both, taking special trips to browse the garden center’s deep and balanced stock of plants. If you don’t happen to know the story behind the place, you may be surprised to know that its founder, Mable Tsugawa, started it with no nursery experience or knowledge. For the first year it was a one-person operation, and she was that one person. Determination and hard work allowed her to transform it into the destination it has become. Mable passed away Aug. 27, 2011 at the age of 84. The Longview (Wash.) Daily News has written her life story and featured it as this week’s spotlight Sunday Obituary. It’s well worth reading.
