Buley, Nilsen join Friends of Trees board of directors
Two members of the OAN have been appointed to the board of directors for Friends of Trees, a Portland-based nonprofit that supports urban tree planting along streets and in natural areas.
Nancy Buley is the marketing and communications director at J. Frank Schmidt & Son Nursery. She joined because she would like to further the connections between “nonprofits, urban foresters, nursery and tree growers, garden communicators, landscape architects” and others who work together to make trees and greenspaces flourish in the Portland area. In addition to her work at JFS, she is co-owner of High Tech Turf & Trees, a landscape construction firm.
Fred Nilsen is the arboriculturalist in charge of Hoyt Arboretum and Forest Park, and has held the job for two decades. He is a longtime supporter who hopes to enhance and increase appreciation of the metro area’s urban forest. He would like to see “a more diversified plant palette on our city streets.” When Richard Seidman founded the organization, Nilsen provided a place for training the first crew leaders, and sites for the group’s first natural area plantings.
Also appointed to the board was Janelle Geddes, the restoration grants coordinator for the Metro regional government in Portland, Ore.
