This is part of our continuing coverage of the Farwest Show. Keep checking back for updates. This post concerns Day One of the Farwest Show Tours, specifically, Tour 1, the Gen(i)us Acer tour on Tuesday, August 21, 2012.
Our second stop was Herinckx Nursery in Gervais, Ore. This nursery, founded in 1986, specializes in Japanese maples. Owners Tim and Karen Herinckx grow them mostly in the field, but they also offer them in 1-gallon and 2-gallon containers. Tim and Karen met in college; he has a hort degree and hers is in secondary eduation. So, he runs the farm and she helps in the summer, teaching English classes the rest of the year.
The tour appeared to go very well, with several participants asking that particular trees be flagged for later sale to them.
Laurence Frost, a nursery production manager from New Zealand, grows Japanese maples. He came on the tour specifically to see unique Acer selections, and was not disappointed. “Lovely,” he said. “They’re good. I do commend them on their choice of varieties.” He particularly liked the structure of the nursery’s selctions, which he felt represented some of the best on the market — no easy feat considering that “there’s so many varieties (out there),” he said.
Don’t forget, we’ll post more photographs tonight at the Farwest Show Facebook page at www.facebook.com/farwestshow.
