Ulrike Mengelberg at the Energy Trust of Oregon dropped us a note to let us know they’re offering an incentive for growers who install energy-saving thermal curtains in their greenhouses. Qualifying growers can receive 9 cents per square foot of heated greenhouse (or square feet of curtain, but the former number in most cases will be higher). The curtain must be installed above the heated space, and it must be drawn closed automatically every night. Other terms and conditions also apply.
“One of our participants received a rebate check for more than $2,500 when they installed a greenhouse curtain,” Mengelberg said. “In addition that nursery is expected to save more than $14,000 each year for at least five years in reduced natural gas bills. This participant paid about $14,000 for their thermal curtain, but they will be saving almost that amount each year in natural gas savings.” Between the incentive and the savings, the curtain was paid for in less than nine months, she added.
