Jordan Schrader Ramis offers nursery law seminars

By Curt Kipp — Posted March 10, 2011

OAN member Jordan Schrader Ramis PC, a law firm based in Portland that specializes in business and real estate law, is offering a series of seminars on nursery industry law. All seminars will be 90 minutes in duration, and will begin at 1 p.m. at the Oregon Association of Nurseries office, 29751 S.W. Town Center Loop West, Wilsonville, Ore. The seminars are free to OAN members only. Dates and topics are as follows:

  • March 10: Collections and Credit — Economists may say the recession is over, but many growers still are justifiably concerned about making sure they get paid for the plants they ship. Law experts from Jordan Schrader Ramis PC will provide several best practices (and quick and dirty tips) to make sound credit decisions and help growers protect their bottom line. Handbooks will be made available at a special seminar price for those who attend.
  • April 14: Employment and Immigration Law — Ron Guerra and Steve Shropshire will discuss common employment and immigration law issues and traps faced by the nursery and greenhouse industry. They will offer practical tips for staying out of trouble with respect to worker protection laws, wage and hour disputes, workforce management, employee handbooks, and immigration-related matters. In addition, they will provide important advice for how to react in the event of an employment-related complaint or a visit from immigration enforcement agents.
  • May 12: Water Issues — Steve Shropshire will discuss current developments relating to water rights and water quality management. With all the activity in this area at the moment, it is more important than ever to stay on top of these developments. Steve will discuss the changing regulatory environment and the developing opportunities for agricultural land owners. He’ll also offer practical advice on working with the Water Resources Department during this period of significant budget cutbacks.
  • June 2: Business Law Basics — Steve Shropshire and Brad Eriksen will discuss several important business law topics, including basic contract law, business entity selection, tax strategies, business succession planning, and intellectual property protection. The seminar will include plenty of time for discussion of issues of interest from the audience.

Advance registration is required. To sign up, call 503-682-5089 or e-mail [email protected].
