Watch your mail: The 2025 USDA Census of Horticulture Specialties is being mailed this month to more than 2,000 horticultural operations in Oregon and some 40,000 nationwide. The census asks questions about crops grown, their value, the square footage used for growing them, production expenses and more.
Deadline: Responses are required by law. They are due by February 14, 2025.
Why it matters: The census, taken every five years, paints a complete picture of the nursery and greenhouse industry. It helps operators as well as public officials and industry advocates understand the scope and impact of the industry, which in turn can help guide their decision making.
“Your response will help the continued growth and sustainability of horticultural production in Oregon and the United States,” said Dave Losh, the Oregon statistician for the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). “In addition, census results can help you make informed decisions about the future of your own horticultural operation.”
Nurseries and greenhouses are consistently the #1 agricultural sector in Oregon by annual sales as measured by the census.
“We use the Census of Hort statistics to advocate for nurseries, particularly Oregon nurseries,” OAN Executive Director Jeff Stone said. “These surveys, taken every five years, consistently show Oregon as a top grower of woody material in the nation. These statistics really do help us stand up and be counted.”
Privacy protected: All individual responses are kept confidential. Data is published only in aggregate form, ensuring that no individual nursery can be identified in the published results.
