By Curt Kipp — Posted November 21, 2008

With the economy as it is, retailers are expecting an absolutely dreadful holiday shopping season, but that may not be the case for Christmas tree growers. According to the Pacific Northwest Christmas Tree Association, sales of real Christmas trees usually go up when the economy is in a downturn. Sales went up in 2002, which […]

Bye bye butterfly (bush)

By Curt Kipp — Posted November 21, 2008

Nursery operators have known for some time that cultivars of the butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) are on the way out of Oregon nurseries, deemed invasive by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Nurseries can’t propagate it, and they have until the end of 2009 to get rid of their remaining stock. Now the word is getting […]

E-verify not required of all

By Curt Kipp — Posted November 17, 2008

We noted earlier today that U.S. Homeland Security posted a new rule requiring federal contractors to use E-verify, effective Jan. 16. Well, evidently, we should have said “many federal contractors,” because in a concession to business groups, only federal contractors doing $100,000 worth of federal work or more will be so obligated. The Washington Post […]

Immigration frustration

By Curt Kipp — Posted November 17, 2008

The issue of comprehensive immigration reform didn’t get mentioned much, if at all, by either candidate during the recent presidential campaign. That was in spite of the fact that Sen. Barack Obama and John McCain both have favored a reform approach that includes a path to citizenship. Now that Obama is the president-elect, activists are […]
