Working assets

By Chris Waetzig — Posted December 28, 2018

Educating workers on personal finance helps both the employer and the employee Articles seem to be published every day about how individuals will have to work well past retirement age because they haven’t saved enough for retirement and Social Security soon won’t be sufficient to meet their income needs. “Saving more” isn’t the simple solution […]

Does your customer’s experience match your marketing?

By Ian Doescher — Posted December 28, 2018

Imagine this scenario: you see Apple’s commercials. They’re full of young people having fun, living their best lives (we’ve all seen them). You see Apple’s advertising — slick, smooth, promising technology that changes your life and leads you into the future. You hear about Apple’s products and how innovative and game-changing they are for the […]

Trees for screens

By Tracy Ilene Miller — Posted November 26, 2018

Living screens are as versatile as they are varied. They hide the neighbors, block ugly views, provide backdrops and create garden rooms. Originally, though, screens were used to hem in livestock. When humans made the leap from hunter-gatherers to start an agrarian lifestyle, they prevented animals from wandering by using living screens left behind as […]

Winter is coming

By Mike Hiller — Posted November 26, 2018

This might sound like a plug for Game of Thrones — after all, the Season Eight premiere isn’t that far away! But seriously, winter isn’t just coming, as they say. It’s here. Preparations must be undertaken. From a grower’s standpoint, we are almost done getting the plants ready to survive the winter. Some growers, meanwhile, […]

People. That’s what it’s about.

By Curt Kipp — Posted October 24, 2018

It takes a number of essentials to transform a healthy seed, seedling, cutting or start into a market-ready plant or tree. There’s water. Fertilizer. Pest management. Growing media for containerized plants, or healthy soil for those grown in the field. If any of these are missing or unavailable, the product will suffer or die, but […]

The leadership farm team

By Curt Kipp — Posted October 24, 2018

When people talk about the nursery industry’s human resource challenges, they often speak strictly in terms of labor. But the nursery industry needs people at all levels, from entry-level workers to crew leaders, supervisors, managers and above.  To succeed in a challenging industry, nursery companies rely on the experience, technical knowledge, management ability and leadership […]

Working wonders

By Jon Bell — Posted October 24, 2018

Despite pervasive labor struggles, nurseries find ways to find workers There was a time, up until 2006 or 2007, when Robinson Nursery in McMinnville, Oregon would lay off at least 30 percent of its workforce every year, just after the fall season and heading into winter. Back then, the nursery industry’s labor pool included a […]

The essentials of retention

By Bill Goloski — Posted October 24, 2018

Many growers can’t set the price of their products in the national marketplace. They are competing for business with growers from states that don’t have same high cost of doing business, which puts Oregonians at a competitive disadvantage. This means business owners must focus on collecting high-value returns on high-cost labor expenses. When compiling salaries […]

The ‘tangled root ball’

By Sherri Noxel — Posted October 24, 2018

Family-owned businesses must balance work, ownership and family roles Each June, family business owners interview with a panel of peers to compete in the Excellence in Family Business Awards. Judges consistently ask each CEO how they carve out time for their family. To date, the most memorable — and perhaps practical — “policy” came from […]
